"I am excited about my future with the organisation"
1. Why did you apply to be a volunteer for Healthwatch?
I heard about Healthwatch through a family friend and was immediately interested in the work that they do. As a student studying nutrition and public health, I am obviously very interested in the way that healthcare services are run in the local area, but also to see what patients think about the level of care they are receiving. On the other hand, I am also passionate about making positive changes to the healthcare provisions from a personal perspective, having had lots of interactions with multiple services due to personal circumstances.
2. What do you enjoy the most about volunteering with Healthwatch?
Having only been a volunteer with the organisation for a short while, I have already been thrilled to have the opportunity to get involved in a variety of tasks straight away. I have already participated in training sessions and signed up for a range of activities, giving me the chance to experience lots of different aspects of the organisation. I think the way that staff interact with the volunteers is exceptional, making sure that there are no barriers between our role and theirs, which creates a real team atmosphere.
3. What skills have you developed since volunteering with Healthwatch?
I have developed a range of personal and professional skills since starting my volunteering role. As well as organisational and professional skills, I also go home on an evening telling my family about the people that I have met and how my communication skills are being utilised all of the time. I think it is fantastic that Healthwatch offer such a variety of roles and are happy to let us be involved with many aspects of their work. Not only is this giving me the opportunity to use skills I have previously developed, but I can also give tasks a go that I may not have thought of initially.
4. What would you say to somebody that is considering volunteering with Healthwatch?
I would say that if you are passionate about speaking to people, learning about healthcare provisions in the local area and want to work towards making a positive difference to enhance patient experience, then volunteering with Healthwatch is your opportunity to do so. I am excited about my future with the organisation and to find out where I can be involved in the range of work that they complete.
